Hi, new & confused!
« on: July 20, 2010, 08:29:39 PM »
Hi everyone, I'm Rachel from Australia.  I've been reading on your site on and off for a while now & thought it probably time to introduce myself!  :)

Why am I confused?  All my life I was anti-DP.  Basically I'm a murder victim survivor of a close family friend - more about that another time, but it happened when I was 6 years old.  Even still, my parents brought me up that the DP was wrong because it meant we were no better than the murderer.  So, I went with that..... then I had kids and I am starting to swing very strongly to 'the other side of the fence', although I'm still not entirely sure where I sit on the issue.  I just think that there really are some people out there that perhaps DON'T deserve to live.  Anyhow, so that's what I'm doing here, I hope to get to know some of you very soon!

Welcome to the site!  :-* Sometimes sitting on the fence is not a bad place to be. Honestly everyone on this site has their own views on the death penalty. Everyone is here for a reason. I am sorry for the loss of your close family friend.  :-*

Hi Angel Welcome to the site.   :-* :-*

My sympathys for the loss of your family friend.

This is a great site with a wonderful group of people.  We are all here for our own reasons as I'm sure you are too.  Some of us are here because we have lost someone close due to a violence, some are here to see that justice is served, some are here sitting on the fence and some are ardent anti-DP but very respectful of others opinions.

Hope to read more from you in the near future.

Welcome Rachel. Glad you found this site and sorry for your loss.  :-*

As for being a fence sitter, many of the people on this forum were at one time or another. I have even questioned the DP at various points in my life, though I've always basically supported it.  For me it's not so much about the offender and whether or not they deserve to live. It's about the victim and the fact that they didn't deserve to die. You may find that most people who have been personally touched by violent crime, even those who were once fence sitters or antis, find themselves supporting capital punishment.

Again, welcome to the site. Look forward to hear what you have to say.  :)

Hi Rachel,
Welcome to the site. I too have spent my life against the DP but age, and hopefully a bit wisdom have taught me that there are cases that just plain cry out for death, some people commit crimes that are so depraved they give up their right to live. I don't think every murder should result in the DP, but that isn't what happens in this country, we reserve the DP for the worst of the worst and that's just fine by me. Again, welcome to the site.

Hi Rachel, welcome to the forum. :-*  Glad you decided to start posting.  Looking forward to your input into the debates. :-*
