TORONTO - Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a mass shooting with a "strong indication" of gang involvement has left two people dead, and 24 others injured.
Toronto Mayor Rob Ford characterized as an "unfortunate, and isolated incident."
A 14-year-old girl, and a 23-year-old man were killed and 21 others, including a 22-month old infant, were injured after gunfire between two individuals erupted at a neighbourhood party.
Global News has learned that the 14-year-old is Shyanne Charles, and the 23-year-old is Joshua Yasay. Police believe both victims were innocent and neither the intended target of the public shooting.
Close to 200 people were at the party on Danzig Street, near Morningside Ave. and Lawrence Ave. when the shooting started shortly after 10:30 p.m. after a fight broke out.
Shannon Longshaw, one of the organizers of the community barbeque, told Global News that Toronto Police had asked a number of times prior to the shooting for organizers to keep the noise down.
Longshaw had started cleaning up after the 200 party-goers when a fight reportedly sparked the mass shooting.
"I personally went to look for the kids - I threw garbage out and by the time I came around to the front of the house to get the kids there were shots. I just ducked," Longshaw said. "I jumped my fence and I just started running and looking for my kids."
