Larry Matthew Puckett, Mississippi Death Row Inmate, To Be Executed

STARKVILLE, Miss., March 20 (Reuters) - A Mississippi man convicted of sexually battering and murdering his former employer's wife was scheduled to be executed on Tuesday, the first of two lethal injections planned in the state this week.

Larry Matthew "Matt" Puckett, 35, was convicted of capitalmurder and sentenced to death in 1996. If carried out as scheduled at 6 p.m. CDT at the Mississippi State Penitentiary in Parchman, his execution would be the second in Mississippi this year and the 10th in all of the United States in 2012.

Puckett was found guilty of fatally beating 28-year-old Rhonda Hatten Griffis, a mother of two, in October 1995 with a wooden club at her home in Petal, a small community of about 10,000 in south Mississippi.

Griffis' mother entered her daughter's mobile home after hearing a "scream and a thud" and found Puckett holding a bloody club, according to court records.

Puckett said he had come to the home because he hit a deer on the side of the road and needed help from the victim's husband, David Griffis, for whom he had previously worked before getting fired.

After struggling with David Griffis, who managed to take the bloody club, Puckett left the home and ran into nearby woods, records show.

Griffis found his wife lying in a puddle of blood on the bedroom floor. Court reports show she died from injuries including deep cuts on her head, back and chest and was bleeding from her genitals.

Authorities later found Puckett at his mother's home.

During the murder trial, Puckett claimed he had planned to burglarize the Griffis' home and entered it even when he saw Rhonda Griffis' car parked outside.

Claiming to have had an affair with her several months before the incident, Puckett testified he and Rhonda Griffis were kissing until they heard her mother approach the mobile home.

Puckett said it was David Griffis who murdered his wife with the club after accusing her of having an affair.

When does MS execute their trash?
My reason for supporting the death penalty? A murderer has less of a right to live than his victim and already presents a danger while incarcerated for life. They have nothing to lose when the most they can get is Life in prison without parole.

If her mother had thought for one moment that her son-in-law killed her daughter, then I am pretty sure she would have said something.  Two motherless children left because this POS couldn't keep it in his pants.  FRY IN HELL YOU B@ST@RD

Since I have been on death row Mississippi has executed four men. The most recent was October 2006. it was his turn and as each day progresses, as each appeal is denied it's one more closer to my turn. "Please God, don't let it be my turn." Now picture yourself surrounded by big burly men with firm grips on you as they direct you to the execution chamber. The excitement and base fear course through you like no other time in your life. You sweat, you pant, you want them to stop. They won't, they can't, the whole process is inexorable. Ironically, at the moment of your death your body proves to you are the most alive. Everything in you is on heightened alert. Your skin is flushed with heat and goose flesh. Your body pumps adrenaline through you as fast as it can be produced and you suck oxygen until you are on the verge of hyperventilating. You plead for mercy but there are no ears to hear. You don't even get up on the table yourself or lay down because the officers have forcibly done it for you. (Each participant has been thinking about how it was their own 'turn' to complete some task in your death.) They strap you down across the chest, at the wrists, elbows, waist, thighs, and ankles. Once "secure", they prick your arm with a needle that will be your end.

It's just too close for comfort for me. I know how close my turn is and it even makes my heart race to write about a sequence of events that I am, at present, safely removed from.

It has to come, I can't stop it. The prospect alone is just too damn close for comfort.

Well, our Larry never considered what his victim was feeling during her murder. Just too good for Larry. We had to do the same for my beloved cat recently and all he had done wrong was to get very ill and old.

Sheriffs McGee & Rigel set to witness execution Tuesday

Mississippi is set to execute two death row inmates this week, one of those men is Larry Mathew Puckett, 35. Puckett was convicted in 1995 for sexually assaulting and murdering a Forrest County woman. Two local Sheriff's vividly remember the case and reflect upon her death.

Lamar County Sheriff Danny Rigel said, "There are certain crime scenes that just stand out in your mind and this is one of them. It was a very brutal crime scene."

Larry Mathew Puckett, then 18, was arrested two days later, then convicted and sentenced to death.

Forrest County Sheriff Billy McGee recalls Puckett being detached from the incident." He didn't talk about it, and he didn't mind being in jail. The case was put together without him giving any kind of confession."

Rigel says, "I believe Rhonda was their only daughter, only child and it was very traumatic for them, as can be expected. That's not something you get over during your lifetime. They are still very emotional when you talk to them."

McGee said, "That had to be horrific for the mother to go into the trailer and witness what had gone on."

Those emotions returned to the surface last week when her daughter's killer asked the Supreme Court to block his March 20 execution. Puckett's lawyers claim prosecutors kept African Americans off of the jury, and his former lawyers never challenged his conviction on those grounds.

"It is not uncommon for one thing," said McGee, "I don't see how it was prejudiced to him since he is white, the victim was white, everybody involved was white. I don't see how that was prejudiced at all, having an all white jury."

I am not an attorney," said Rigel, "But I don't really know how that would play into anything. There was no minorities on either side of the incident and the courts have ruled."

If Puckett's petition fails, McGee, Rigel and the victim's parents will witness his death by lethal injection on Tuesday.

It looks like Larry has quite an appetite today...

This morning at approximately 0450 hours, at Unit 17, Inmate Puckett was offered breakfast consisting of grits, 2 boiled eggs, 1 biscuit, coffee and 2 boxes of milk. Inmate Puckett ate everything.

For lunch, Inmate Puckett was offered 3 ounces of meatballs and gravy, 4 ounces of rice, 4 ounces of turnip greens, cornbread, cookies and 8 ounces of tea. Inmate Puckett ate all of it other than the rice and cornbread.

Inmate Puckett has access to a telephone to place unlimited collect calls to persons on his approved telephone list. He will have access today, March 20th until 5:00 p.m.

According to the MDOC correctional officers that are posted outside his cell, Inmate Puckett is observed to be somber.

Last Meal

Inmate Puckett requested the following as his last meal: Macadamia nut pancakes, maple syrup, butter, shrimp and grits, ice cream cake from Dairy Queen, bag of Werther’s Originals caramel candy and an A&W Root Beer. (Well that certainly covers the entire spectrum  8) )

Man convicted of 1995 Petal murder maintains innocence

2:48 PM, Mar. 20, 2012
Written by Jesse Bass, American Staff Writer

Larry Matthew Puckett, set to be executed this evening, is currently visiting with his family.

Mississippi Department of Corrections Commissioner Chris Epps said in a news conference at Mississippi State Penitentiary that six family members were meeting with Puckett as of 2 p.m.

Puckett, 35, was convicted in 1996 of the October 14, 1995 murder and sexual battery of Rhonda Hatten Griffis in Petal.

Epps said Puckett still maintains his innocence.

“He said there was more to the story,” Epps said.

Currently visiting with Puckett are his mother, Mary Puckett, his father, Larry Ross, two brothers, Edgar Puckett III and Paul Michael Puckett, stepmother Janie Ross and uncle Keith Stennett.

Epps said Puckett is reportedly “somber,” according to MDOC officers stationed outside his cell.

For his last meal, Puckett has requested macadamia nut pancakes with butter and maple syrup, shrimp and grits, an ice cream cake from Dairy Queen, a bag of Werther’s Originals caramel candy and an A&W root beer.

He has requested none of his family nor his attorney witness his execution, scheduled for 6 p.m. by lethal injection.

The victim’s mother and father, Cecil and Nancy Hatten of Hattiesburg, are scheduled to witness the execution.

Lamar County Sheriff Danny Rigel, Forrest County Sheriff Billy McGee and Sunflower County Sheriff James Haywood will witness the execution, along with the Hattiesburg American and three other media outlets.

Epps said more updates would be delivered to media soon.

Read more in tomorrow’s Hattiesburg American or later today at hattiesburgamerican.com.
