Convicted killer's June execution delayed

Published 08:16 a.m., Monday, May 21, 2012

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — The execution of a man early next month for the slaying of a Dallas woman at her apartment more than 20 years ago has been delayed.

Dallas County prosecutors asked a judge to withdraw the June 6 execution date for 39-year-old Bobby Lee Hines because results of additional DNA testing in his case won't be available by then. District Court Judge Don Adams in Dallas approved the request Friday.

Hines was convicted of the 1991 murder of 26-year-old Michelle Wendy Haupt. She was stabbed with an ice pick and strangled.

Hines was 19 at the time and on probation for a burglary conviction. He was staying with the apartment complex maintenance man who lived next door to the victim and had access to all the keys in the development.

A 1991 murder and the X is being delayed? This is quite mad.

Guess there's a case of cold feet going around because of that "innocent" that was executed.

Looks like one of the antis' goals were accomplished =/
My reason for supporting the death penalty? A murderer has less of a right to live than his victim and already presents a danger while incarcerated for life. They have nothing to lose when the most they can get is Life in prison without parole.

I'd hardly call it an anti-victory.  It's merely a temporary postponement for what most likely will be no more than a few months, to cover their asses and ensure the validity of the DP.  It's hardly a travesty of justice, and everyone will sleep better going forward when all the ticks in the box are checked off.

It's not a show, it's a life, and I'm certain it will happen once the DNA has been confirmed.

For a murder in 1991, another delay is ridiculous by any standard. The delay is criminal.

"DNA" is another excuse for a delay. John Spirko of Ohio had 6 "DNA" tests before his sentence was commuted.

Although many requests for DNA testing may be considered suspect, this is not a stay so testing may be conducted, it is so it can be completed.  This testing may have been requested a while back, and neither the prosecutors or defense can help that it has taken this long.  Do we know how many sets of DNA tests have been requested, and when this latest round of testing commenced?

DNA Confirms Death Row Inmate's Guilt: Prosecutors

Thursday, Sep 6, 2012  |  Updated 12:12 PM CDT

The Dallas County district attorney's office says it will seek a new execution date for a man condemned for the slaying of a Dallas woman at her apartment more than 20 years ago after new DNA testing confirmed the prisoner's guilt.

Prosecutors in May asked a judge to withdraw the June execution date for Bobby Lee Hines pending the outcome of the tests.

The district attorney's office said Thursday testing of nail clippings from 26-year-old Michelle Wendy Haupt confirmed Hines as the man who strangled and used an ice pick to kill her in 1991.

Hines, now 40, was 19 at the time and on probation. He was staying with the apartment complex maintenance man who lived next door to Haupt and had access to keys to apartments.

He was hoping for the rare occurrence that the DNA could be mixed up with someone else's. Well when all else fails, why not hang your hope on that very unlikely hope.
