John Uzell Balentine--New Date August 22, 2012
« on: October 17, 2011, 07:22:29 PM »
Hello. Thanks for allowing me to join. I hope I'm putting this in the right place!

Back in June of this year, John Balentine received a last minute Stay of Execution. Last I checked (late June 2011), the USSC was going to review the case in October 2011. I am just wondering if anyone here knows anything or could direct me to a site with information? I've done some searching but nothing really comes up after June 2011.

I am absolutely glad I found this forum! I won't mention the name of another forum (think Prison) that I stumbled across because almost every post that had to do with Balentine went against every fiber of my being. Balentine shot and KILLED my (then) 15 year old cousin, along with 2 other teens.  I won't get into any more specifics. I'm sure the information is out there on his crime(s). I don't mean to sound cliché but I really need closure on this. It's so hard (for me) to see the Execution delayed while Balentine tries to fight his case. He didn't give the 3 teens a chance to fight for their lives (he shot them all in the back of the head while they were sleeping) and it pains me to see him fighting for his now.

Thanks for your time and I look forward to getting acquainted with this forum and its members. I haven't really opened up to many people regarding this topic. I have a "Hope for the Best but Expect the Worst" outlook. That being said, should the worst case scenario for me come true (sentence commuted), I'm hoping to start the healing process NOW by joining and venting.

Thanks! I *did* do a search using his last name but nothing recent (after June 16th, 2011) came up.

Much appreciated.

Welcome to the board Duke, you are definitely on the right forum. There are a few members who post regularly here who have also lost family members to scum, and we are here to support them. Many of us are PROs who believe that the VICTIM is the most important person to be considered, not the bleeding heart POS.

I am so sorry for your loss, and you will be in my prayers.

May your God go with you.

Duke, you will be in ours as well.  Welcome.  balentine will soon get his just deserts soon enough.  And we shall rally to you to support you because YOU are our friend and brother.

Duke, welcome to the forum.   :-* :-*

You have found the correct place for family members of victims to get the support you need.  We have quite a few MVFs here, and we all support each other.

I am sorry to say that I don't think you will ever find closure for the murder of your loved ones.  You may get some relief for a while, but then someone will say something and the wounds open back up, nearly as fresh as the day it happened.  Especially while awaiting the execution of the person who murdered your loved one.  But you will find many supportive people here who really care about you and your family's welfare.

If you need to vent more privately, we have a section for the families of murder victims, where you can vent  freely and out of sight or hearing of the public.  You will have privacy to work through your grief with other family members and the admins and mods on the site.  Just send a pm to the admin and we will admit you to it.

Best :-* :-*

PS  The latest I can find on him and his stay is for June 15, 2011.  Nothing since then.  Sorry.

I live a hundred miles from Amarillo.  We go there frequently.  And we get all our news from Amarillo.

I remember the case when it happened, that someone shot 3 sleeping teenagers in the back of the head.  Balentine was charged with it.

Amarillo murderer granted stay of execution

John Balentine

AMARILLO, TX - An Amarillo man set to be put to death today has been granted a stay of execution.

Just moments ago, federal judges decided they would hear John Balentine's attorney's arguments on how he received poor legal help in 1999 for his capital murder trial.

Balentine was convicted for the January 1998 killing of 17 year old Mark Caylor, 15 year old Kai Geyer and 15 year old Steven Watson.

This stay of execution is the second to be granted for the 42 year old convicted murder. The first one happened before his scheduled execution in 2009.

An uncle of Mark Caylor, one of Balentine's victims spoke with NewsChannel 10 this afternoon.

He says the stay being granted is just another example of how slow the legal system is here in the United States.

Condemned triple killer loses federal appeal

      Texas Department of Criminal Justice

HOUSTON (AP) — A federal appeals court has lifted a reprieve it gave to a Texas prisoner who came within a day of execution last year for a triple slaying in Amarillo nearly 13 years ago.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, taking another look at the case of convicted killer John Balentine, said arguments from lawyers that his trial attorneys failed to adequately tell jurors in 1999 about Balentine's childhood of poverty, violence and abuse are procedurally defaulted and can't be considered.

The decision reverses a ruling earlier this year from the New Orleans-based appeals court.

Balentine's appeals attorney, Lydia Brandt, said Thursday while the decision is not good for Balentine, she will continue to pursue appeals.

"We are taking it under review and will proceed accordingly," she said. "I'm not going to say it's all over at this point. There's still more litigation that we can and I will be doing."

The court also rejected Brandt's request for a rehearing by the full 5th Circuit, but said a similar rehearing request could go before the three-judge panel that issued the latest ruling.

Balentine, 41, was condemned for the slayings of Mark Caylor Jr., 17, and 15-year-olds Kai Brooke Geyer and Steven Watson. They were each shot once in the head as they slept at an Amarillo house where Balentine also once lived.

Caylor was the brother of Balentine's former girlfriend and prosecutors said the slayings capped a feud between the estranged couple.

In September 2009, the 5th Circuit halted Balentine's punishment a day before he was scheduled for lethal injection in Huntsville.

Balentine was pulled over by a traffic cop in Houston in July 1998 and provided a false name, but the alias was detected as one used by a man wanted in the shooting deaths of the three teenagers six months earlier in Amarillo, 600 miles to the northwest.

In a tape recorded statement to police played at his trial, Balentine said he moved out of the Amarillo house because of drug use there, then said he learned later that Caylor wanted to kill him because he had "jumped on his sister." He slipped into the house and "shot Mark in the head and shot the other two in the head," he said.

"Mark had threatened my life, threatened my brother, girlfriend and the kids, waving a gun and talking about what he was going to do to me and whoever else come over there looking for me and stuff," he said.

He also said he didn't know the other two victims.

Balentine, from Jackson County, Ark., northeast of Little Rock, had previous prison terms in his home state for burglary, kidnapping, assault and robbery.

Thank you so much!! This is exactly what I needed! I appreciate the warm welcomes and am glad to help in any way I can. I am in Kansas City, currently, but my family is all over the Texas Panhandle. Steven's mother couldn't take living in Amarillo any longer after her only son was murdered so she's since relocated to the Dallas-Fort Worth area. She has suffered so much since his death. I feel so helpless! Last June didn't help matters any. She made the trip to watch the execution only to be turned away just hours before. It truly bothers me the amount of scrambling done by Balentine's side in the final minutes which lead to his most recent Stay. I know as a family, we hope that Balentine isn't on Death Row for as many days as Steven lived. Steven was only 15 and so far Balentine has been locked up for over 10 years. I know that the average wait on Death Row is right around 10 years. My thinking may not be "right" or even "politically correct" but I believe as much mercy should be shown to him as he showed his 3 victims (and their families). NONE! From what I've gathered, he is now claiming is council was ineffective and they failed to bring up his abusive childhood. My childhood was no walk through the park yet it never drove me to kill anyone. I don't buy that for one minute. We all make choices in our lives and I firmly believe his "choices" will ultimately result in his death. Anything less than him being executed will be a great injustice to all victims involved. IMHO, he took 3 lives in a cowardly fashion and should therefor pay with his own.

Thanks for giving me a venue where I can voice my opinion and don't have to worry about some group over in Europe making my life hell for standing up for what I believe. Even before this case I was pro DP. It's a great feeling knowing I can talk about that freely here.

Once again, THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Duke, WE are the people that their parents warned them about.  With trolls that come here and try to mess with our members, our brothers and comrades, we have NO MERCY.  We send them back to pto like their a$$es were on fire and the rest is catching.

I personally was banned for life twice on PTO.  Anytime they want some they can bring it...and some friends...cause that is how I roll.

Welcome Duke - you will find this place to be a wonderful community of people who will support the victims and their families like no other.  Sadly, justice takes so long and the facts will get so twisted in the media (and other sites)........wish I could take all that away for you and your family.

Article from June 2011

After reading this article I couldn't help but wonder if Balentine's attorneys didn't call witnesses on his behalf (He confessed, for crying out loud!) or bring up his troubled childhood during the trial so they could use it now like they are?! One would think that even if you have a court appointed attorney, they don't want their client to die. Why wouldn't they exhaust every resource? I just don't understand. The higher court was supposed to review this case sometime this month but I've yet to hear anything.

Maybe, deep down I want Balentine to have hope. I want him to think he has a chance to live. His 3 victims certainly weren't given a chance. On second thought, I want him to pay with his life for not only the lives he took but the ones he ruined. His violent acts of selfishness don't deserve even the faintest of reviews. He should be an afterthought. Instead he wastes more time, resources and money while fighting to live. WHY?!?!?! Accept your punishment and die already! You've had plenty of time to write your pen pals in Europe. At least you get a chance to say your goodbyes.

Arrrggghhh!

Europe is full of stupid women who profess their 'love' for DR inmates. The reason for that is quite simple.  In Europe their 'boos' will eventually be released and this would mean they would have to be with them for real. A DR inmate will never share their bed.

They are disgusting, stupid and in their own way dangerous. They make me angry as hell, and I am Scottish  ;)

The first flakes of snow began to appear, just a few here and there.
And while I look at those falling and dancing little pieces of cold, which soon will form a delicate carpet on the ground, I'm wondering.
I'm wondering why the life is what it is. There is so many things I don't understand about human being.

Reading your post , makes me feel so useless. Speechless witness in front of your pain.
I would like to know the words that comfort, that relieve, do they exist? Im not really sure.
That man, like all killers , who destroy lives and all those who gravitate around them,
don't understand the destruction, the damage by which they are responsible.
Sometimes I feel like they really live in another world. Their own world.

You don't know me, you probably never will, but I would like to say to you that even if im a stranger,
here today, in the privacy of my life , while those little flakes show up in the sky,
I'm thinking about you , your family and I understand the pain of that long wait for closure.
I remember
