on: February 03, 2009, 01:53:54 PM 2 General Death Penalty / U.S. Death Penalty Discussion / Justin Thurber Sentenced to Death in 2007 Kansas Murder

Jodi Sanderholm, 19, was a college student and a member of the dance team at a small community college in a small Kansas town. She disappeared on January 5th, 2007. She had just left her dance practice which was located behind the Subway restaurant and called her mom telling her she was not going to meet her for lunch, and was going to go home instead. Sanderholms drive home usually took about 6 minutes, she had left the practice at 11:50. Police would later learn that at 12:08 a classmate would see Jodi driving her car with "a big man" inside of it. At about 6 p.m. that evening a man by the name of Justin Thurber called his father saying that he needed a ride, he was on the outskirts of town at the wildlife area/lake. By 7pm Justin had changed out of his wet clothes and was on his way to Subway to pick up his last paycheck, he had been fired the previous week. By this time Jodis' parents have notified the police of their missing daughter, and they were questioning her friends. One name was mentioned multiple times, Justin Thurber.

Justin was known as a "groupie" of the dance squad and infact had been seen cruising the parking lot of the building where the practices were held often, even on the day Jodi disappeared. When police questioned Justin 2 days later he told them he had been hanging out with his friends on that Friday. Police would later say his friends had not seen him all day. This was just the latest in a string of strange incidents involving Justin. On January 3rd, two days before the disappearance the manager at Subway had arrived at 6:30 am to do truck inventory. But she was not alone. Justin was there as well, in coveralls and a stocking cap. He asked the manager if he could have a ride, his car had broken down. She said that she could not do it because of inventory, and hurriedly entered the business making sure to lock the door behind her. About 10 minutes later she saw Justin again. He drove through the Subway parking lot in his car. The next morning the same manager asked for a police escort to work. When she arrived at 7 am she discovered that the lock had been disabled, and had to use the front door to enter the building. The next day Jodi would be murdered.

Meanwhile the search for Jodi continued. It did not take long. On the morning of January 9th her car was discovered at the bottom of a lake outside of Arkansas City.
She was not inside. Using items taken from the car once it was pulled out of the water, tracking dogs quickly located her nude body under a pile of branches. She had been raped, then strangled in a manner reminiscent of BTK, a local serial killer who confessed to 9 murders. This person had strangled Jodi to the point of suffocation, then would loosen the rope to allow her to regain consciousness. But Jodi made sure her attacker would not get away. Under the middle fingernail on her right hand there was DNA. There was also footprints left by her sandals as well as her attackers. There was hair on the drivers seat of her car that did not belong to her, and nobody ever drove Jodis' car.

On January 11th, police arrested Thurber on an unrelated charge. He had falsely identified himself as a "bounty hunter working for the police" in order to gain access to a residents house on the premise that he was trying to locate a wanted person. After Thurber had left, the occupant contacted the police, who then arrested Thurber.

Details after this get sketchy, some say he gave a partial confession, some say he gave a full confession. In the 2 years this has taken to come to trial he has also spent 3 months in a KDOC mental facility to make sure he was fit to stand trial.
Kansas only has 9 people on death row, so it is pretty rare to have a DP trial here. Hopefully he will get what is coming to him, and will not sit in prison for 20 years before Kansas gets the balls to execute him.

GALVESTON, Texas – Jurors wept Tuesday watching a woman describe how teaching her 2-year-old daughter proper manners turned into a daylong torture session in which the toddler was beaten with belts, dunked in cold water and flung across a room so violently that she died.

Kimberly Trenor, 20, detailed the abuse in a videotaped statement played for jurors during the first day of her capital murder trial.

Trenor, 20, told investigators in the statement that she hit her daughter with a thick leather belt to teach her to say "please" and "yes, sir."

The little victim was dubbed "Baby Grace" by investigators who worked to identify her decomposed remains after the body was found in a plastic container in October 2007 on a tiny island in Galveston Bay.

Trenor's 25-year-old husband, Royce Zeigler II, is to be tried separately on murder charges. His attorney argues that Trenor is responsible for the child's death.

But Trenor insisted it was her husband who became so enraged when the toddler didn't behave better that he hurled her several times across a room, ultimately fracturing her skull and killing her.

"I said we have to get her to a hospital. (Zeigler) said, 'No we can't. We'll go to jail,'" Trenor said in the videotape, crying. "There came a point where she stopped breathing. He started doing CPR on the floor. He took her ... and handed her over to me. I could just feel her going cold."

At the defense table, Trenor's eyes teared up as she watched the videotape on a large screen. Several jurors wiped away tears.

Riley Ann Sawyers tried to stop her mother and stepfather from beating her to death by reaching out to her mother and saying, "I love you," assistant district attorney Kayla Allen told jurors earlier in the day during her opening statement.

The toddler's pleas didn't stop her mother from brutalizing her, the prosecutor said.

Allen said that on July 25, 2007, Trenor and Zeigler disciplined Riley by whipping her with a belt, pushing her head against a pillow and holding her head under water. She said Zeigler tossed Riley across the room, fracturing her skull. An autopsy concluded the fractures caused her death.

Allen said the adults did nothing to help even as Riley lay dying.

Instead, the couple bought a plastic container, stuffed Riley's body inside and stored it in a shed for a month or two before setting it out to sea, the prosecutor said.

Defense attorney Tommy Stickler Jr. told the jury that Trenor never intended to kill her daughter and that things just "spun out of control."

Stickler portrayed Trenor as a scared 19-year-old girl who had moved to Texas from Ohio to marry a man she met while playing an online game. She said Riley's father, her former boyfriend, had assaulted her and Zeigler was her "knight in shining armor."

"I don't want to use the word accident, but this wasn't something that was intentional," Stickler said.

Trenor could receive an automatic sentence of life in prison without parole if convicted of capital murder. The jury could also convict her of a lesser charge.

Prosecutors declined to seek the death penalty because they didn't think they could prove that either one would be a future danger, as required.

on: November 10, 2008, 03:35:48 PM 6 General Death Penalty / Mark Anthony Stroman - The American Terrorist - EXECUTED / Another Death Row Blog!!

Ladies and Gents, meet Mark Stroman. His sister had died in the tragedy of September 11th, and being the genius that he is went looking for revenge against the terrorists. Besides the fact that the terrorists were among the ashes in NY, DC, and Pennsylvania, the only other problem he had was that someone forgot to teach dear Mr. Stroman the difference in Indian (hindi) and Saudi Arabian (muslim) people. On October 4th, 2001 this lovely gentleman entered Moms convenience store in Mesquite Texas and shot the owner 49 year old Vasudev Patel to death. He also shot two Pakastani men at different locations around Dallas, killing one and wounding the other. Here is the link!

Hello all. My name is Rob and I hail from the great state of Texas. Unfortunately I have been transported to the state that brought you "In Cold Blood", BTK, and the Carr brothers. After being booted from multiple "support" sites I began looking for a place where people did not worship murderers and other convicted criminals. I found this site looking for information on Derrick Sonnier so here I am. Glad to be here. :)
