Billy Don Alverson - Oklahoma Death Row - Scheduled Execution for January 6, 2011

EXECUTED 6:10pm

Victims: Richard Yost

The Crime: Alverson was convicted of first-degree murder for the Feb. 26, 1995, killing of 30-year-old Richard Yost, who was the night manager of a convenience store in Tulsa. His body was found bound and beaten on the blood-soaked floor of the store's cooler.

Alverson is one of four men convicted in Yost's death.

News: Convicted killer Billy Don Alverson became the first person in the United States to be executed in 2011 Thursday night.

Alverson is one of four men convicted in the beating death of Tulsa QuikTrip clerk Richard Yost in February, 1995.

It took five minutes for the State of Oklahoma to execute Alverson, who was declared dead at 6:10pm.

Members of Yost's family were in McAlester to witness the execution, as were five members of Alverson's family. At 6:03pm the blinds to the execution chamber opened, revealing Alverson strapped to a gurney with an IV coming out of both arms.

Alverson's final words were remorseful.

"Yes, first I would like to say to the Yost family I'm sorry," Alverson said. "Forgive me. And to my own family: I'm alright. God is good. Don't you cry - uh-uh. Don't you do it."

He went on to tell his mother, father, grandmother, brother and sister individually that he loved them.

Then a cocktail of pentobarbital, vecuronium bromide and potassium chloride was administered through Alverson's IVs. Five minutes later a doctor checked for vital signs and declared him dead.

Yost's wife released a statement after the execution saying she wished she did not have to be there, but Billy's actions brought her there.

"Understanding, this execution will not bring Richard back, nor will it give me the closure that I am looking for. To be honest, I do not know if I will ever have true closure," She wrote.

"there are no winners tonight, each of us from both sides of the family have lost. It is a loss that no one will understand unless they have be(en) in the same situation. I want to give my condole(nce)s to the Alverson family."

Tulsa County District Attorney Tim Harris says 16 years later justice has finally been served.

"That ultimate punishment was delivered tonight," Harris said. "And the Yost family has waited a long time for justice. And in our criminal justice system, that has brought some more closure to one of the most heinous murders committed in Tulsa County. And that justice was meted out tonight with the execution of Billy Alverson."

For his last meal Alverson ate a large pepperoni and Italian sausage pizza from Pizza Hut and a large Dr. Pepper.

Alverson is the 174th man to be executed in Oklahoma.
