Gerald James Holland - Mississippi Death Row - Scheduled Execution for May 20, 2010

Victims:Krystal King

The Crime: Sentenced to death from Adams County for the 1987 beating, suffocation and stabbing death of 15-year-old Krystal D. King.

Condemned inmate Gerald James Holland was pronounced dead at 6:14 p.m. today.

Holland's attorney Steven Orlansky visited with him at 3 p.m. and shared with him that the governor and U.S. Supreme Court had rejected his requests to avoid being put to death.

Corrections Commissioner Chris Epps said Holland, 72, the oldest inmate on death row, had requested a sedative before being executed and was given a Valium.

Orlansky was Holland's only visitor today and he made no telephone calls.

Holland told correctional officials today that he regretted what he did and believes God has forgiven him.

Epps said he didn't believe Holland showed remorse. He said Holland admits he killed 15-year-old Krystal Dee King of Gulfport in 1986, but says he didn't rape her.

Hollandís attorneys asked for a stay in papers submitted to Justice Antonin Scalia.

Gov. Haley Barbour earlier today said he was not going to grant clemency to Holland.

Holland has requested that no family members or his attorneys view his execution.

Last Meal:
14 ounce T-bone steak, baked potato, brussel sprouts, salad, apple pie and a liter of Pepsi.

Final Statement:
"I'm really deep down in my heart sorry it happened," he said before reading the 23rd Psalm from a paper held by the prison chaplain. "I wish this would bring her back. I want you to know that I'm very sorry this ever happened. I knew it was wrong but it was alcohol, despair and temper that caused it." "That's it,"
