Martin Grossman - Florida Death Row - Scheduled Execution for February 16, 2010

Victims: Florida Wildlife Officer Margaret Park

The Crime: Grossman was 19 years old when he and a friend went to a wooded area in Pinellas County on Dec. 13, 1984 to shoot a stolen handgun.

Florida Wildlife Officer Margaret Park interrupted them and Grossman pleaded with her not to report him for having the gun and being outside Pasco County, both of which were violations of his probation for burglery.

Grossman struck Park on the back of the head when she tried to radio for help and his accomplice beat her.

Grossman, who was a foot taller and 100 pounds heavier than Park, wrestled her gun away from her and shot her in the back of the head.

News: STARKE, Fla. Florida has executed 45-year-old Martin Edward Grossman, who was convicted of killing a state wildlife officer during the 1980s.

Governor Charlie Crist's office said Grossman died at 6:17 p.m. on Tuesday at Florida State Prison.

He was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of Margaret "Peggy" Park, a Florida wildlife officer who was shot with her own gun in 1984.

Grossman was the 69th person executed in Florida since the death penalty was reinstated here in 1979. He was the 25th by lethal injection, the fifth executed under Florida Gov. Charlie Crist and the first in 2010.

Park's family traveled from Ohio to witness the execution.

Last Meal: Grossman didn't request a last meal before the execution, but purchased from the prison canteen a chicken sandwich, a can of fruit punch and banana cream and peanut butter cookies.

Final Statement: "I would like to extend my heartfelt remorse to the victim's family," Grossman said in his last statement. "I fully regret everything that occurred that night. Everything that was done, whether I remember everything or not, I accept responsibility."
