Wayne Tompkins - Florida Death Row - Scheduled Execution for November 18, 2008

Victims: Lisa DeCarr

The Crime: Tompkins was sentenced in Hillsborough County for killing 15 year old Lisa DeCarr, when she resisted his efforts to rape her, whose mother he was living with. Two years later, he told a cellmate he attempted to have sexual intercourse with her, but she fought him, so he strangled her and buried her under the house, where her body was found in a pink bathrobe.

News: Gov. Charlie Crist signed an execution warrant Thursday for Wayne Tompkins, sentenced to die for killing his girlfriend's 15-year-old daughter and burying her in a shallow grave under her home n 1983.

Crist has asked that Tompkins to be executed at 6 p.m. Oct. 28.

It is the fourth such warrant for the former roofer. He was sentenced to death in 1985 for killing Lisa DeCarr. A unanimous jury recommended the death penalty. His case has been through numerous state and federal appeals. The Florida Supreme Court last upheld the conviction and sentence in May 2007.

The DeCarr disappeared from her home in March 1983. Her skeletal remains, her pink bathrobe and pieces of her jewelry were found under the home three months later.

A friend of DeCarr testified at the trial that she entered the home on the morning of the disappearance and saw DeCarr struggling with Tompkins while Tompkins was on top of her on a couch trying to remove her clothes.

The friend said the victim asked her to call police, but instead the friend told the DeCarr's boyfriend and went to school.

Tompkins had a previous conviction in Pasco County for kidnapping and rape.
UPDATE Nov. 14th: The delayed execution of Wayne Tompkins is back on again. Tompkins was scheduled to die Oct. 28 for the 1983 Tampa murder of 15-year-old Lisa DeCarr.

The Florida Supreme Court today lifted a stay postponing Tompkin’s execution ordered by Gov. Charlie Crist.

Tompkins had been scheduled to be put death in 1989 and 2001 under death warrants signed by Govs. Bob Martinez and Jeb Bush but appeals delayed the execution.

No new date has been set yet for the execution by lethal injection.

A rapist convicted of murdering his girlfriend's teenage daughter 26 years ago was executed Wednesday after the courts refused to reconsider his claims of innocence.

Wayne Tompkins, 51, was pronounced dead at 6:32 p.m. at Florida State Prison. He had been condemned for the murder of 15-year-old Lisa DeCarr, who disappeared from the Tampa home she shared with Tompkins and her mother on March 24, 1983.

DeCarr's mother and others thought she had run away, but her body was found a year later under the home's porch. She had been strangled with the belt of the pink bathrobe she had been wearing.

Tompkins, who had been arrested in early 1984 after he robbed and sexually assaulted two convenience store clerks in separate attacks, was charged with her murder. A cellmate testified that Tompkins confessed, saying he had strangled the girl after she kicked him in the groin while rebuffing his advances.

Last Meal: Fried chicken, banana split ice cream and some water.
