I am a man who has been on Florida's Death Row over 21 years, for a killing I did not do. And the man who did the killing have been off death row about ten years.

Derrick Sonnier - Texas Death Row - Scheduled Execution for June 3, 2008

EXECUTED 6:18PM

Victims: Melody Flowers and her 2 yr. old son.

The Crime: In the summer of 1991, Sonnier, his girlfriend, and her daughter lived two apartments down from Melody Flowers and her five children in the same complex in Humble. Obsessed with Flowers, Sonnier peeped into Flowers’ bedroom and made suggestive comments to her and her teenage niece. At least twice, Sonnier slipped into Flowers’ apartment and hid in her closet in an apparent attempt to scare her.

In the afternoon of September 16, neighbors discovered Flowers’ one-year-old daughter, Morgan, crying at the door to her apartment, blood on her clothes. After neighbors looked through an open patio door and saw a pool of blood on a bed, police were called.

Police found the bodies of Melody Flowers and her son Patrick in the bathtub, partially covered by a blanket. Patrick had been stabbed twice, and Flowers had been stabbed, bludgeoned with a hammer, strangled, and stomped.

Meanwhile, that afternoon, Sonnier, with a bloody towel wrapped around one hand, was spotted by a neighbor walking toward a field near the complex.

As part of their initial investigation the day of the murders, police officers knocked on Sonnier’s door. Sonnier answered and before being questioned, told the officers, “I didn’t hurt her. I am just here with my daughter.” The officers saw the Sonnier’s hand was wrapped in a bloody towel.

In Sonnier’s apartment, police found towels and a blouse, all blood-stained. One of the towels and the blouse were identified as belonging to Flowers. In a field near the complex, police discovered a plastic shopping bag containing a piece of cord, shoes, socks, shorts, and a shirt, all blood-stained. The clothes were identified as being similar to those worn by Sonnier that day before the murder. Testing showed that Melody Flowers’s DNA matched that of the blood found on one of the socks.

News:Texas set to resume executions this week

Associated Press - June 1, 2008 1:15 PM ET

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) - The nation's busiest death chamber reopens this week after a nearly 9-month break.

Texas resumes executions with the scheduled lethal injection of a former part-time car-wash worker for killing a suburban Houston woman and her young son 17 years ago.

The Tuesday execution of 40-year-old Derrick Sonnier (SAHN'-yah) would make him the fourth prisoner put to death in the nation since the U.S. Supreme Court in April upheld lethal injection as legal. But it'll be the first execution in Texas since September 25th. That's when convicted killer Michael Richard was executed in Huntsville the same day justices decided to consider a challenge from two condemned Kentucky inmates who said lethal injection was unconstitutionally cruel.

For Texas, the execution lull was the longest in two decades. Texas has put 405 convicted killers to death by lethal injection since the state resumed carrying out capital punishment in 1982.

At least 14 Texas inmates have execution dates as the state's is poised to quickly reassume its status as the country's most active state in carrying out the death penalty. Of the 42 executions in the United States last year, 26 were in Texas. The next busiest states were Alabama and Oklahoma, each with three.

Sonnier's to die for the deaths of 27-year-old neighbor Melody Flowers and her 2-year-old son, Patrick, at their apartment in the Houston suburb of Humble (UHM'-buhl).
-----------------------------
HOUSTON -- Relatives of a murdered woman and child plan to attend the killer's execution 17 years after the deaths, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Tameka Traylor and other relatives said Monday they are looking forward to Derrick Sonnier's execution, scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday in Huntsville.

Traylor's mother, Melody Flowers, and her 2-year-old brother, Patrick, were murdered in their Humble apartment in September 1991.

Sonnier was convicted of stabbing, raping, and strangling his neighbor. Police said he had become infatuated with her. Patrick was stabbed 8 times. Both victims were found floating in a bathtub.

"I feel as though I'm standing up for them and being there for them, for their justice" said Traylor.

Traylor said she was 8 years old when she and other siblings came home from school to realize something horrible had happened.

She described her mother as happy and a loving mom who leaves a legacy to her five children.

HUNTSVILLE, Texas — Convicted killer Derrick Sonnier has been executed for the slayings of a woman and her young child at their suburban Houston apartment almost two decades ago.

Sonnier shook his head negatively when asked if he had any final statements. He was pronounced dead at 6:18 p.m., eight minutes after the lethal dose began.

Sonnier, 40, made a similar trip to the death house seven weeks ago but was spared when the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals stopped his scheduled punishment after lawyers raised questions about the legality of the lethal injection procedures.

That appeal subsequently was rejected, Sonnier's death date was reset for Wednesday evening and his legal avenues to avoid execution were exhausted.

He was the third Texas inmate to die this year and the 13th nationally.

 Re: who makes these decsions?
Oh please do not think for one minute this man has been spared. The courts will be setting a new date by weeks end or the very beginning of next week. This man received a stay because the TCCA had a case to decide on and until that case was decided the court halted the execution. Well, on Monday that case was decided and this "stay" was lifted. I have heard he will be executed most likely some time in July.

 who makes these decsions?
This is yet another reason why I am puzzled how this process works. The inmate who was previously executed desired a stay and was denied. Yet this 'man' is spared. His crime was absolutly outrageous.who makes these decsions?
